The undisputed historic heart of American gay liberation. The Castro District (around Castro Street and 18th Street) remains the symbolic center—rainbow flags, the Castro Theatre, Harvey Milk's camera shop location, the AIDS Memorial Quilt origins. But the scene has shifted: the Mission District holds the Latinx queer community, SOMA (South of Market) handles the leather, kink, and circuit party culture (Folsom Street Fair, Dore Alley), and Oakland across the bay attracts younger, more diverse, more affordable queer life. San Francisco's scene is smaller than it was—the tech boom displaced artists and queers—but it's still dense, political, and deeply institutionalized. The LGBTQ+ Center, the GLBT Historical Society Museum, and massive healthcare infrastructure (SF General's Ward 86 pioneered AIDS treatment) make this a place of pilgrimage. The weather is terrible, the rent is worse, but the history is unmatched.
